Yet Amélie makes sure to cover her tracks she doesn't want to be found out. Coworkers, grocery clerks, neighbors- it seems that anyone could be fair game in her quest. Invigorated by her success, Amélie starts to look for a new test subject. Of course, Amélie does succeed in reuniting the tin box with its now adult owner, but does so without revealing her identity. She has an idea: if she can find the original owner of the box and reunite him with his long-lost possession, she plans to continue working at affecting the lives of others. The plot develops with Amélie's discovery of an old tin box of child's memorabilia hidden within the wall of her apartment. The 4th wall is briefly broken when Amélie herself turns to the camera- explaining that she is a keen observer of other people. It appears that Amélie lives a lonely life, mostly keeping to herself in contrast to her chatty colleagues and acquaintances. Amélie, the audience learns, is a young woman who lives alone and works in a cafe in the Paris neighborhood of Montmartre. The voice starts with her birth, continues on through childhood loss and neglect, lists her main likes and dislikes, and then brings the audience forward to the present-day setting of the film: the city of Paris. Seemingly modeled after a documentary film, an unseen narrator shares a little bit about Amélie. It's a suitable introduction to the title character of Amélie, who we learn is also the identity of the little girl. The girl plays to the camera lens as she draws on her fingers, plays with fruit, makes faces, and smiles.
